Al Riveron is stepping down as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s supervisor of football officials, ending a tenure that began in November 2022 after a distinguished career that blends college and professional officiating.
Riveron brings more than three decades of experience as an on‑field official and administrator, having started as the NFL’s first Hispanic referee and later serving as the league’s senior vice president of officiating before his retirement in August 2021.
During his time with the ACC, Riveron helped construct a new gameday operations center and oversaw the conference’s relocation of headquarters from Greensboro to Charlotte, North Carolina, a move that positioned the league closer to its central network hub.
Riveron’s legacy of leadership
He was a regular presence in that operations center during replay reviews, and the ACC earned a first‑in‑the‑nation distinction by allowing television audiences to listen live to those reviews on select broadcasts.
Commissioner Jim Phillips lauded Riveron’s transparency and collaborative approach, noting that his leadership set a new standard for openness within the conference’s officiating ranks.
The ACC has now launched a national search to identify Riveron’s successor, aiming to preserve the high bar he established for officiating excellence.
