The University of North Dakota’s hockey program is set to welcome a new face between the pipes for the 2026‑27 season, as Alex Scheiwiller has officially signed on as the team’s third goaltender.
Scheiwiller arrives after a standout junior career in which he led the Canmore Eagles to an Alberta Junior Hockey League championship and posted a .921 save percentage, earning both the AJHL Goaltender of the Year award and playoff MVP honors.
A Strategic Addition for the Fighting Hawks
Standing over six feet tall, he will share the crease with Jan Špunar and Caleb Heil, forming a uniquely tall trio that gives the coaching staff added flexibility and depth.
Beyond his on‑ice credentials, Scheiwiller brings a blend of Canadian and Swiss citizenship, having navigated the AJHL, a brief two‑game stint with Kamloops of the Western Hockey League in 2024‑25, and previous experience in the WHL.
His arrival follows a long gap since the last third‑string keeper appeared in a regular‑season game; the previous occurrence dated back to Jan. 14, 2023, when Zach Sandy filled the role for the Fighting Hawks.
Coaches have described the signing as part of a broader strategy to deepen the roster’s talent pool and ensure a reliable fallback as the team prepares for a competitive season ahead.
