Lowndes County has introduced a fresh community football team and cheer squad under the name Legends, a project spearheaded by Londell Hill, a longtime resident and physical‑education instructor at Central Elementary School.
A Coach’s Call to Action
Hill, who grew up playing pee‑wee football in the area, created the program to give local children more opportunities to engage in organized sport. His goal is to foster teamwork, discipline and a sense of belonging among the youth.
The Legends compete in the Central Alabama Youth Football League and call Central High School in Hayneville their home field. Their debut match is slated for August 27, while the full season schedule is still being finalized.
Practice sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the roster backed by a team of volunteer coaches including Isaiah Scott, Brandon Thomas and Sade Woods for football, and Shara Nelson, Erica Collins and Kandace Thomas for cheerleading.
Beyond the field, Hill stresses that community involvement is essential. Fundraisers and sponsorships will be needed to cover uniforms, equipment and travel costs, and he urges residents to attend events, spread the word and help families in need.
If the initiative gains traction, Hill believes the Legends can become a positive outlet for young people and a unifying force for the county, turning shared enthusiasm for sport into lasting community pride.
