Heartland Teams Gear Up for Tournament Action
The Ohio Valley Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference are set to begin their baseball championships this week, bringing together the top regional teams in a race for automatic NCAA Regional berths.
In the OVC, SIUE captured the regular‑season title while Illinois‑Chicago secured the Missouri Valley regular‑season championship, setting the stage for a showdown in Marion, Illinois, where the tournament will open on Tuesday.
The Heartland will be represented by four squads: UT Martin, Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois and Murray State. UT Martin opens its OVC campaign at 3 p.m. against Lindenwood at Mountain Dew Park, a win‑or‑go‑home matchup that could propel the Skyhawks into the double‑elimination bracket.
Southeast Missouri State enters the tournament already assured of a spot in the main draw and will meet the UT Martin‑Lindenwood winner on Wednesday at the same hour, aiming to defend its 2024 championship that last sent the team to the Fayetteville, Arkansas, Regional Final.
The Missouri Valley tournament kicks off Wednesday in Murray, Kentucky, hosted by Murray State. Fourth‑seeded Southern Illinois will square off against fifth‑seeded Evansville, while third‑seeded Murray State will follow with a contest against sixth‑seeded Illinois State, after which the bracket will reseeding.
All games across both tournaments will be streamed live on ESPN+, with the OVC championship concluding on Saturday and the MVC crown decided later that same day.
While Murray State reached the NCAA Regionals last season, Southern Illinois has not appeared in a regional since 1990, adding extra intrigue to the upcoming contests.
Streaming and Stakes
Fans can watch every OVC and MVC game on ESPN+, where the winners will earn a ticket to the NCAA Regionals. The stakes are high, especially for programs seeking their first regional appearances in decades.
