Shreveport Times Launches Athlete of the Week Voting

Students from 15 Northwest Louisiana Schools Compete for Prizes, Swag and a Feature Story

Voting Open for High School Athlete of the Week

The Shreveport Times has opened online voting for its weekly Athlete of the Week honor, spotlighting standout performers in Louisiana high school sports beyond football across fifteen northwest Louisiana schools.

Fans can cast their ballots on the newspaper’s website under the sports section, with the voting window remaining open through Friday night; the winner will be announced on Sunday.

Each weekly champion receives a backpack, a boxed lunch combo, assorted swag and a feature story that celebrates their achievements on the field and in the community.

The tradition builds on a preseason recognition that named Violet Collier as Preseason Volleyball Player of the Year, setting a high bar for the athletes now on the ballot.

The current ballot showcases a diverse mix of talent from schools such as Benton, Evangel, Haughton, Airline, North DeSoto, Loyola, Minden, Plain Dealing, Byrd, Northwood, Calvary, Many, Caddo Magnet and Natchitoches Central, each representing a different sport within the LHSAA framework.

Sponsorship and Community Support

The awards are made possible through the generosity of local partners, including Raising Cane’s, which supplies the backpacks and lunch combos, and Cosse and Silmon Orthodontics, which contributes additional swag.

The Shreveport‑Bossier Sports Commission also plays a pivotal role in coordinating the program, while the USA TODAY Network amplifies the story across a national audience.

Coverage of the competition and its participants is provided by Jimmy Watson, who writes about Louisiana sports for the USA TODAY Network.
