A Wish on the Diamond
When Brandy Findley learned that the Southern Miss baseball team was preparing for a pivotal game against Troy University, she asked her family to arrange a surprise that would let her experience the excitement from her hospital bed.
The family reached out to university leaders, and the team, moved by the request, prepared a special tribute for the 31‑year‑old who was in hospice care after a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma.
During the game, Drey Barrett launched a grand slam that sent the Golden Eagles into the semifinals, a moment that lit up Findley's face and gave her a brief surge of joy.
After the final out, Barrett took a signed game ball, a player card, and a handwritten letter and sent them to Findley, hoping the simple tokens would bring a smile before her passing.
Findley's daughter, Diamond Ellis, recalled how her mother always sought something to be happy about, even as her health waned, and said the gesture reminded her of the power of kindness.
Though Findley never got to verbally thank the players, Ellis believes the love reached her mother in her final days, and the family felt a deep sense of gratitude toward the team.
Funeral services were held on July 9 at Vision Baptist Church in Petal, Mississippi, where friends and family gathered to celebrate a life that found happiness in the smallest moments.
