Women’s Professional Baseball League Reveals Team Names and Logos for Inaugural Season

San Francisco Firebells, Los Angeles Queens, New York Heights, and Boston Hunters draw on historic female figures

The Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) has announced the nicknames and logos for its four franchise teams, setting the stage for a debut season that will begin on August 1 in Springfield, Illinois.

Games will be held at Robin Roberts Stadium, with the regular schedule stretching into the second half of September and playoffs to follow.

Team Inspirations

The San Francisco Firebells take their name from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a celebrated volunteer firefighter who championed the city’s early fire department. The Los Angeles Queens honor Lizzie Murphy, known as the “Queen of the Diamond” for her trailblazing play in the early 20th century. The New York Heights are named for Dorothy Irene Height, a civil rights and women’s rights leader whose advocacy shaped generations. The Boston Hunters pay tribute to Dr. Harriot K. Hunt, a pioneering physician who opened doors for women in medicine.

Kelsie Whitmore, a rising star pitcher, will wear the Firebells’ colors, while Mo’ne Davis, the former Little League sensation, will play center field for the Queens.

The league’s overarching goal is to create a professional environment for women’s baseball that mirrors the legacy of the All‑American Girls Professional Baseball League, offering a platform for talent that has long been overlooked.
