Southern Indiana Basketball Prepares for a Rebuilding Season

Coach Stan Gouard leans on unity, new transfers and fresh leadership to turn the tide

Southern Indiana’s men’s basketball program is entering a pivotal phase as head coach Stan Gouard looks to rebuild after a seven‑win season. With only three players returning and a wave of twelve transfers, the team’s focus has shifted toward unity and collective purpose.

The returning trio — Kaden Brown, Josiah Dunham and Alem Fejzic — have embraced leadership responsibilities, translating Gouard’s messages into daily practice. Brown and Dunham are already guiding the newcomers, while Fejzic missed offseason workouts to serve Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national team.

Adding to the mix, guard Ari Gooch arrived from Alabama‑Birmingham, drawing praise from Gouard for his work ethic, though the coach cautions that the entire squad must rise to his standard.

Cultivating Chemistry On and Off the Court

The coaching staff itself has been revamped, welcoming Stefan King, Doug Novsek and Dylan Ingram. Novsek, who previously collaborated with Gouard, brings familiarity with the Ohio Valley Conference, while King and Ingram add fresh perspectives to talent identification.

Practices that began in June have already shown an increased sense of urgency. The players have bonded through outings such as golf trips and shared viewings of the NBA Finals, reinforcing the off‑court chemistry that Gouard deems essential.

The ultimate goal is clear: transform a program that struggled last year into a competitive force by prioritizing camaraderie, early bonding and a relentless work ethic.
