A somber mood settled over the small town of Apold this week after authorities confirmed that Gabriel Muresan, a 44‑year‑old former Romanian international and the town’s mayor since 2020, had drowned in a lake on the outskirts of the community.
A career that blended sport and public service
Muresan began his professional journey in the youth ranks of FC UTA Arad before establishing himself at CFR Cluj, where he helped the side capture league titles in 2008, 2010 and 2012 and added three domestic cups to his résumé over six seasons.
He earned nine caps for the senior Romanian national team between 2007 and 2011, and his European pedigree grew during three group‑stage campaigns in the UEFA Champions League, where he faced heavyweights such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma.
The Romanian Football Federation issued a statement on Thursday expressing its condolences, describing Muresan as “a dedicated servant of Romanian football whose contributions on and off the pitch will be remembered fondly.”
A community in mourning
Residents gathered at the lake’s shore on Friday, laying flowers and observing a moment of silence as the town grappled with the loss of a figure who had become synonymous with both sporting triumphs and civic stewardship.
While the investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues, the incident underscores the fragile intersection of public duty and personal vulnerability, leaving a void that will be felt across Romania’s football circles and municipal governance alike.
