Dylan Dudley Exits Alton High for Illinois College Coaching Role

After guiding the Redbirds to two regional titles, the coach embraces a new challenge at his alma mater, prompting a community farewell and a search for his replacement.

Dylan Dudley, the longtime boys basketball coach at Alton High School, revealed this week that he will be stepping down to take the helm of the Illinois College Chargers, his alma mater.

Dudley, who has been at Alton since 2022, guided the Redbirds to two Class 4A regional championships and compiled a 70‑59 record over his tenure, a run that many locals will remember for its consistency and grit.

A New Chapter at Illinois College

In a heartfelt statement, Dudley praised the Alton community, calling it a special place and highlighting the bond he shared with his players, a relationship he encapsulated with his catch‑phrase, “same dude everyday.”

Alton’s athletic director, Tyler Hamilton, thanked Dudley for his contributions and announced that a national search for a new head coach is now underway.

Dudley’s departure follows the exit of Steve Schweer, who left Illinois College earlier this year for a position at Wisconsin‑Oshkosh, creating a vacancy that Dudley is now poised to fill.

Beyond high school basketball, Dudley brings a robust coaching résumé that includes stints as an assistant at Westminster College and Drury University, a head men’s golf coaching role at Westminster from 2006 to 2008, and previous work at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth, Texas.

A graduate with a Master’s Degree from Henderson State University, Dudley also boasts experience at several other institutions, including Drury University and the University of Tennessee‑Martin, as well as Central Missouri, positioning him as a versatile strategist ready to shepherd both his high school and college teams through the transition.
