Napier and Lagway Reckon With Florida Tenure's Growing Pains

Billy Napier, who guided the Florida Gators for several seasons, recently acknowledged that his own stubbornness and the sheer weight of his responsibilities contributed to the team's inconsistent performance.

He explained that the rapid evolution of name, image and likeness deals and the constant reshaping of the roster left his staff stretched thin, making it difficult to focus on pure football strategy.

The coach also noted that the Gators posted a combined record of 10‑8 during his tenure, a statistic that underscores both the flashes of promise and the missed opportunities.

DJ Lagway, the former quarterback, added that a series of health setbacks — including shoulder, groin and calf injuries — eroded his confidence and hampered his play on the field.

He recalled a five‑interception outing against LSU and a three‑interception game versus Kentucky, moments that highlighted the volatility of his college experience.

Despite finishing the season with 2,264 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 picks, Lagway said the injuries left him feeling physically spent and mentally doubtful.

After the season concluded, he announced his transfer to Baylor, seeking a fresh environment where he could rebuild his career without the lingering medical concerns.
