Vanderbilt Basketball to Host Historic Outdoor Exhibition Against Virginia

The Commodores will face the Cavaliers at Charleston’s Credit One Stadium in a landmark early-season matchup

Vanderbilt’s men’s basketball program will stage an unprecedented outdoor exhibition game against the University of Virginia on September 27, taking place at Charleston’s Credit One Stadium. The contest forms part of a doubleheader that also includes a matchup between The Citadel and the College of Charleston, and is being billed as potentially the earliest Division I men’s basketball game ever played at a non‑traditional venue.

A Historic Outdoor Matchup

Coach Mark Byington, who took the reins this season, described the event as a unique opportunity that blends tradition with innovation. He emphasized that the outdoor setting will give fans a fresh experience while highlighting the Commodores’ growing prominence on the national stage.

The game will also provide a first look at star guard Tyler Tanner, who elected to remain at Vanderbilt rather than pursue the NBA draft. Last season Tanner averaged 19.5 points and 5.1 assists, helping the Commodores to a 27‑9 record and a second‑round NCAA Tournament appearance.

Doubleheader Details

The doubleheader will open with The Citadel taking on the College of Charleston before Vanderbilt and Virginia meet on the main court. Vanderbilt has also announced a slate of home non‑conference games against Wake Forest, Memphis and UCF for November, while its SEC rivals for the upcoming season were revealed in late June.
