A Coach with Community Roots
Kennedy Erickson, a 2018 Proctor graduate and former Mirage player, has been tapped to lead the Proctor/Hermantown girls hockey program as its next head coach. His appointment follows the resignation of Emma Stauber, who stepped down after seven seasons that produced six consecutive Section 7A championships and a Class A final appearance in 2022.
Erickson combines a deep playing pedigree with a commitment to public safety. He spent years as a firefighter and fire inspector in Duluth while also coaching the Mirage’s U15‑A team and competing at St. Scholastica, where he helped shape a defensively disciplined college program.
The hire reflects a desire for continuity and fresh energy. Under Stauber’s tenure the program captured multiple section titles and remained competitive on the state stage, reaching the Class A final two years ago before falling in the quarterfinals in the past two seasons.
Proctor Public Schools superintendent Tim Rohweder indicated that the board will formally approve Erickson’s contract at its July 27 meeting. Once approved, the new coach will inherit a roster that has shown resilience despite recent setbacks, including a consolation‑bracket victory after two straight quarterfinal exits.
Beyond the bench, Erickson’s dual role as a public safety officer underscores the community’s blend of athletic ambition and civic responsibility. His experience coaching youth talent and his familiarity with the program’s culture position him to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor.
The upcoming board session will not only confirm Erickson’s appointment but also set the tone for preseason preparations. With the board’s endorsement expected in late July, the team is slated to begin training ahead of the next competitive cycle, eager to translate the new leadership into on‑ice success.
