Marcus High School taps Danny Kelley to lead baseball program

Former pitching coach and interim head coach takes the reins for the 2027 season after a successful interim stint

A new era for Marauder baseball

Marcus High School announced this week that Danny Kelley will serve as the head coach of the varsity baseball team beginning with the 2027 season. Kelley, who previously held the same position on an interim basis, guided the Marauders to the state semifinals during his temporary tenure.

Kelley’s appointment follows a distinguished stint as pitching coach and interim head coach, during which he refined the team’s strategy and cultivated a competitive spirit. His leadership helped the squad achieve a deep playoff run that captured the attention of the local community.

Beyond his coaching credentials, Kelley brings a decade of experience from Hebron High School and Colleyville Heritage High School, where he honed his ability to develop talent and manage complex program logistics. He also teaches science and special education, blending analytical rigor with a commitment to student growth.

Kelley holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education from the University of Tennessee-Martin, underscoring his dedication to both athletic and academic excellence.

The school also took the opportunity to reflect on the contributions of Jeff Sherman, the former head coach who stepped down after guiding the Marauders to six district titles and earning District 6‑6A Coach of the Year honors four times. Sherman’s legacy remains a benchmark for future success.

Districtwide, baseball staffing changes continue to shape the landscape. Flower Mound High School promoted Ben Sartor to head coach in July 2025, while Danny Wallace departed for a coaching position at Westlake High School in Austin.
