Yahoo Sports’ flagship fantasy platform is rolling out a sophisticated ‘Team Offense’ metric that goes beyond raw yardage to capture a team’s overall efficiency and win probability.
During a recent podcast, hosts Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton sat down with Yahoo College Fantasy Football analyst Eric Froton to unpack how the system works and which squads are poised to dominate.
The formula blends five key components: total yardage, offensive efficiency, win‑loss record, turnover differential and a proprietary efficiency multiplier. A touchdown carries a three‑point weight, while 300 yards of net offense add one and a half points, with each additional 50 yards contributing a quarter point.
Turnovers are penalized heavily, costing a team two points per miscue, and wins earn a single point while losses subtract one. This structure rewards sustained drives and punishes mistakes, making the metric a more nuanced predictor of success.
Froton points out that Power Four conference teams plus Notre Dame are the primary focus, but he singles out Indiana, Texas Tech and the Fighting Irish as premium assets thanks to their high efficiency scores and favorable schedules.
Notre Dame’s slate ranks 66th nationally in difficulty, suggesting a relatively manageable path that could translate into a strong offensive rating despite a modest win total last season.
The analyst’s top picks include Oregon, Indiana, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas Tech and Miami, all of which combine explosive yardage with low turnover rates, positioning them as high‑upside selections for fantasy lineups.
Fitz adds that the new model encourages players to target teams that dominate their conferences efficiently rather than simply stacking star players, a shift that could reshape draft strategies across the board.
