A historic partnership
The agreement guarantees that the Sugar Bowl will serve as the venue for CFP quarterfinals on January 1, 2029 and January 1, 2032, while semifinals are slated for January 10, 2030 and January 10, 2031, cementing a multi‑year schedule that blends tradition with modern competition.
These fixtures are part of a broader arrangement that will see at least six CFP games tied to the Sugar Bowl between 2026 and 2031, reinforcing New Orleans’ long‑standing role in college football’s biggest stages since the bowl’s inaugural game in 1935.
The Sugar Bowl’s history is intertwined with the city’s identity; after moving into the Superdome in 1975 it has remained a signature event, even navigating challenges such as the 2006 relocation to Atlanta following Hurricane Katrina, when Ole Miss ultimately defeated Georgia 39‑34 in the January 1, 2026 contest.
Beyond the recent matchup, the bowl has historically hosted 29 national champions, 114 College Football Hall of Fame players, 55 coaches and 21 Heisman Trophy winners, underscoring its prestige and the caliber of teams that gravitate toward it.
The College Football Playoff structure itself features four first‑round games on campus sites before the quarterfinals and semifinals rotate among the New Year’s Six bowls, with the 2027 national championship scheduled for January 25, 2027 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, further expanding the geographic footprint of the sport’s premier event.
