A Tradition of Growth
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros will once again bring soccer to the heart of Brownsville on August 8, marking the sixth consecutive year that the program has organized a community‑focused soccer night.
The evening begins with a free youth clinic for children aged 5‑13, running from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Sams Memorial Stadium. Led by the men’s soccer coaching staff and student‑athletes, the clinic offers drills and activities designed for players of all skill levels.
Following the clinic, the Vaqueros women’s team will host an exhibition match against Monterrey Tech, kicking off at 6:30 p.m. The game is open to the public and free of charge, providing a chance for local fans to see high‑level play.
Head men’s soccer coach Bryheem Hancock expressed enthusiasm about the event, noting that engaging with the community is a core part of the program’s mission. He hopes the clinic will spark interest in soccer among youngsters and broaden participation.
Head women’s soccer coach Nataki Stewart added that the night is about more than competition; it is an opportunity to inspire the next generation to dream big and believe in their potential on and off the field.
For families interested in registering their children, sign‑ups are available at GoUTRGV.com/SoccerClinic. Questions about the men’s clinic can be directed to associate head coach Sheldon Cipriani at sheldon.cipriani@utrgv.edu.
Beyond the immediate event, UTRGV’s ongoing partnership with local schools and organizations reflects a broader commitment to developing soccer infrastructure in South Texas, a region where the sport continues to grow.
