A strategic hire for a franchise on the rise
The Western Hockey League’s Tri‑City Americans announced this week that Cal Filson will join the club as its new Assistant General Manager, a move that places a veteran scout with championship experience directly under General Manager Bob Tory.
Filson will oversee player evaluation, scouting and roster planning, tasks that have become central to the Americans’ strategy as they prepare for the upcoming 2027‑28 season. His appointment was highlighted by Tory, who praised Filson’s reputation for identifying talent that can help build a competitive lineup.
Filson’s career spans more than a decade with the Seattle Thunderbirds, where he rose from Western Regional Scout for the Chicago Blackhawks to Director of Player Personnel, contributing to WHL titles in 2017 and 2023. Prior to that, he honed his eye for prospects in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, a background that underscores his deep roots in junior hockey development.
Team President Jon Sortland described Filson as a person of integrity whose presence will strengthen the organization’s collaborative culture, noting that the hire reflects a shared commitment to excellence both on and off the ice.
Based in Regina with his wife Meg, Filson plans to relocate to the Tri‑Cities for the 2027‑28 season, marking a personal as well as professional transition that fans hope will translate into on‑ice success.
