A storied tenure comes to an end
Hayley Wickenheiser, a Hall of Famer celebrated for leading Canada to four Olympic gold medals and seven world championships, announced that she will leave the Toronto Maple Leafs front office after eight seasons of service. Her departure follows a series of discussions with the team’s newly appointed general manager, John Chayka, who outlined a different strategic direction for the organization.
Wickenheiser joined the Maple Leafs in August 2018 as assistant director of player development and was promoted to assistant general manager in July 2022. Over her tenure she helped shape player development programs and contributed to the team’s community initiatives, earning gratitude from both players and staff.
In a statement, Chayka acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and thanked the impacted employees for their contributions. He emphasized that the move reflects a broader evolution within the club’s hockey operations, aiming to align resources with a fresh vision for the future.
