Marcus Spears Jr., the nation’s top prospect in the Class of 2027, announced Monday that he will reclassify to the 2026 cycle and join the University of Texas men’s basketball program.
A family legacy fuels a new era
A 6‑foot‑9 power forward from Plano, Texas, Spears will forgo his senior year of high school, a move that allows him to enroll at Texas a year earlier. His decision comes after a standout performance with USA Basketball, where he helped the team capture gold at the 2025 FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup.
Spears follows a lineage of elite athletes; his father, Marcus Spears Sr., enjoyed a nine‑year NFL career, while his mother, Aiysha Smith, distinguished herself as a WNBA player after a standout collegiate stint at LSU. His older sister, Cari Spears, is also a rising sophomore volleyball player at Texas, underscoring a family deeply rooted in collegiate competition.
Coach Sean Miller, who guided the Longhorns to a Sweet 16 appearance last season, highlighted the addition of Spears alongside five‑star guard Austin Goosby and transfers David Punch and Isaiah Johnson, shaping what promises to be a formidable 2026 roster.
The Longhorns will open their season on Nov. 26 at the Rady Children’s Invitational, a showcase that will give fans an early glimpse of the new‑look squad.
