The 2026 OVAC Rudy Mumley All‑Star Football Game will make its debut with Instant Replay technology, a system designed to improve the accuracy of officiating calls during the July 15 contest at Wheeling Island Stadium.
A Revamped Playing Surface
A $2 million refurbishment of Bishop Schmitt Field, the venue’s primary turf, is nearly complete. The upgraded field at Wheeling University will be ready for action just in time for the all‑star showcase, giving players a fresh surface on which to display their talents.
Sam Jones, an OHSAA Officials Hall of Famer and OVAC Director of Officials, announced the incorporation of Instant Replay, emphasizing that every official on the crew has previously officiated a state championship game in either Ohio or West Virginia.
Coaches and Teams
Both head coaches, Chris Daugherty and Brett McLean, bring prior experience to the event, having guided squads in earlier all‑star games. The Ohio side will be led by St. Clairsville’s staff, while the West Virginia team will be directed by the personnel from Wheeling Park.
Preliminary rosters have been released, but final selections will be locked when players report to camp on Monday at 9 a.m. at Wheeling University, where the week‑long schedule of band rehearsals, pageants and a pep rally will culminate in the game itself.
Community Impact
The showcase serves as a celebration of regional football talent and a fundraiser for local youth programs. With officials, coaches and players drawn from across Ohio and West Virginia, the event underscores the collaborative spirit of the OVAC and its commitment to elevating high‑school football in the area.
