IceCats Name Chris Bernard as Head Coach Ahead of SPHL Debut

The new coach brings over a decade of experience as the team announces a broadcast partnership and looks to build on last season’s fan support.

The Pee Dee IceCats convened a press conference at the Florence Center on Thursday, marking their official entry into the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).

The event, attended by more than 150,000 fans over the previous season, highlighted the growing community support that helped the franchise transition from the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

Team executives announced a three‑year broadcast partnership with Community Broadcasters, a deal that will bring IceCats games to a wider regional audience.

A Coach With a Decade‑Plus Track Record

Chris Bernard, who has coached for more than ten years including 17 seasons at SUNY Potsdam, was introduced as the new head coach. Bernard emphasized that the team will be built around consistency and high standards.

SPHL Commissioner Doug Price praised the IceCats’ on‑ice achievements and the role of fan engagement in the club’s rise, noting that the league looks forward to seeing the team compete at its highest level.

The IceCats finished last season as runners‑up for the Commissioner’s Cup, a testament to the organization’s rapid development since moving up from the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

With the new broadcast agreement and a clear coaching vision, the franchise hopes to translate its strong community foundation into sustained on‑ice success in the SPHL.
