A championship born from adversity
The 1995 season began with a setback for the Corning East High Trojans baseball team, but the early loss only fueled a relentless drive that would define the program.
Under the guidance of Coach Bill Thomas, the squad embarked on a 25‑game winning streak that culminated in a New York State Class B title, the third championship in five years for the Corning‑Painted Post School District.
Pitcher Brandon Golkiewicz delivered a no‑hitter in the quarterfinals, while catcher Joe Magliocca’s clutch hitting and MVP performance in the Final Four highlighted the team’s balanced attack.
The championship game pitted the Trojans against a formidable opponent, Rob Bell of the Atlanta Braves, who had drafted the young pitcher. Despite trailing 5‑4 entering the seventh inning, the Trojans rallied as Golkiewicz’s dribbler brought home John Cilino and Magliocca to seize a 9‑3 victory.
Garett Vail closed the game with a perfect seventh inning, sealing the win, while co‑captain Steve Mokan’s timely doubles added depth to the offense. The triumph was not only a sporting achievement but also a community celebration, underscored by the simultaneous appearance of the Corning East lacrosse team in its own state title game.
Legacy of a modern dynasty
The 1995 championship added to a legacy that saw the district claim three state titles across three different sports within five years, a testament to the region’s athletic excellence and the dedication of coaches, players, and supporters alike.
