Michael Edwards has stepped down as chief executive of football at Fenwick Sports Group, the firm that owns Liverpool, after just two years in the role. His departure was confirmed by the board and marks the latest change in a leadership transition that began with the end of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.
Edwards informed the board of his decision last autumn and served his notice period, leaving the organization without a direct successor. The move comes as Fenwick Sports Group shelved its ambition to acquire a second club, a project that had been a cornerstone of Edwards’s mandate.
A review of roughly two dozen clubs across Europe produced no viable proposal, leaving the multi‑club strategy in limbo. With the expansion plan abandoned, attention has turned to internal restructuring and the realignment of football operations.
A New Direction for Football Operations
President Mike Gordon will now take direct control of football matters, while Richard Hughes is expected to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal after the summer transfer window. Julian Ward is slated to return as technical director, bringing continuity to the club’s analytical approach.
The reshuffle also signals the end of a long‑standing partnership with Liverpool’s analytics chief Ian Graham, who has been a key figure in the club’s data‑driven strategy since 2011. The recent successes, including Premier League and Champions League titles, were built on the foundation laid during Edwards’s tenure as sporting director from 2016.
