A marker for forgotten pioneers
On the morning of July 11, the Lubbock County Historical Commission will hold a ceremony to unveil a Texas Historical Marker that pays tribute to two long‑forgotten baseball teams. The event is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the northeast corner of University Avenue and Baylor Street, where the marker will be installed.
The marker stands at the intersection of University Avenue and Baylor Street, just a short walk from where the Hubbers once took the field, preserving the memory of a site that has largely vanished from the cityscape.
Professional baseball first arrived in Lubbock in 1922 with the formation of the Lubbock Hubbers, a club that quickly became a staple of the local sports scene and called a ballpark near College Avenue and 2nd Street its home.
A decade later, in 1928, the Black Hubbers emerged as Lubbock’s first African‑American semi‑professional team, breaking barriers and showcasing talent that would later influence the broader baseball landscape.
Both squads brought distinction to the city, capturing championships and earning regional accolades that still resonate in the annals of Texas sports history.
Preserving a shared legacy
The Lubbock County Historical Commission, which has already erected more than 70 Texas Historic Markers across the state, sees this dedication as part of a broader effort to illuminate the hidden chapters of the region’s past. Community leaders hope the new marker will not only honor the teams but also inspire future generations to appreciate the diverse roots of Lubbock’s cultural fabric.
