Jim Mentz, a fixture of Arizona high school sports for nearly four decades, is set to trade the familiar bleachers of Palo Verde for the dugout at Cienega High School. His departure marks the end of a 36‑year chapter that blended baseball excellence with broader campus involvement.
A Legacy of Championships and Community Impact
During his tenure, Mentz guided the Titans to a state championship in 2014 and accumulated more than 300 career wins, the most in school history. He also left an indelible mark on girls soccer, steering teams to three state finals and a semifinal while serving as the public‑address voice for football games for over 30 years.
Beyond the fields, Mentz organized the annual Palo Verde alumni baseball game, a unique event in Southern Arizona that reinforced alumni connections. He repeatedly stressed the importance of teamwork and family, encapsulating his philosophy with the words, “Once a Titan, always a Titan.”
The transition comes at a time of rapid coaching turnover at Cienega. Andres Hackman coached the program this season after Kelly Johnson stepped down to become the boys golf coach, making Mentz the third baseball coach in as many years.
