The emblem was designed by Chris Payne, who previously created the Cambridge United crest, and was revealed in a ceremony that brought together the university, Cambridge United and the city council.

A Partnership Built on History

The collaboration, forged three years ago between Cambridge University Association Football Club and Cambridge United, aims to promote the city’s role in shaping modern football and to encourage community engagement in sport.

The partnership was formalised in March of last year, and its significance was underscored by two matches held to mark the unveiling of a related statue in 2018. Earlier this month, the alliance was celebrated with a match and dinner at Selwyn College, where players from both sides gathered at the Grange Road ground.

Community Focus and Future Initiatives

Beyond the visual rebrand, the initiative seeks to raise awareness of Cambridge’s influence on the game and to provide pathways for local participants, including the university’s women’s team, which now trains and competes at CUAFC’s Grange Road facility.

Labour MP for Cambridge, Daniel Zeichner, praised the ties that bind the city to football history, noting that the new logo encapsulates a broader effort to embed sport within the community.

Godric Smith, director of Cambridge United, expressed his pleasure at the collaboration, emphasizing that the new branding reflects a shared ambition to honour the past while inspiring future generations to play and enjoy the sport.
