Wisconsin’s 2027 Backfield Rises
Analyst Travis Wilson of Bound Wisconsin has compiled a ranked list of the top twenty running backs in the state’s Class of 2027, using a blend of college potential, recruiting buzz, film evaluation, statistical output and award recognition. The rankings aim to capture not just raw numbers but the overall impact each player could have at the next level.
At the top of the list, Kingston Allen of New Richmond shattered the state record with 3,436 rushing yards and 57 touchdowns, a feat that came with an astonishing 9.6 yards per carry average. His blend of speed and power has already drawn attention from several Division I programs.
Close behind, Ayden Nerdahl from Catholic Memorial posted 1,839 yards and 34 scores while averaging 10.7 yards per carry, a combination that has positioned him as a premier prospect for schools seeking a dual‑threat back who can also excel in the passing game.
Other standouts include Austyn Wittek, who earned Big Rivers Conference Offensive Player of the Year after racking up 1,853 yards and 31 touchdowns, and Devon Williams, Jr., the first 1,000‑yard rusher at Catholic Memorial since 2022 with 1,096 yards and 13 scores. Both have attracted significant interest from Big Ten and Mid‑America conference programs.
Jack Nelson’s leadership helped Grafton capture the Division 3 state championship, as he amassed 1,931 yards and 26 touchdowns, while Tysen Teal continues to be among the state’s most prolific returning rushers with 1,887 yards and 32 scores. Their performances illustrate a depth of talent that extends beyond a single star.
Commitments and Future Paths
As the recruitment cycle progresses, several of these backs have already verbally committed to a range of collegiate programs, from Power Five schools to strong FCS contenders. The list of potential destinations reads like a who’s who of Midwestern football, including institutions such as Notre Dame, North Dakota State, South Dakota State University, Air Force, Dordt University, St. Thomas, Southwest Minnesota State, Northern State, Augustana, UW‑Eau Claire, Jamestown, Bemidji State and others.
The commitment process reflects not only personal ambition but also the growing reputation of Wisconsin’s high school football development pipeline. Coaches across the state note that the depth of talent this year could influence recruiting strategies and scholarship allocations for years to come.
