Marcell Johnson, a 2014 graduate of Knightdale High School, has been appointed head football coach at his alma mater, returning to lead the program where he once starred as a defensive back.
A Homecoming for a Young Coach
Johnson’s football journey began in the halls of Knightdale before he moved on to James Madison University, where he contributed to the 2016 FCS National Championship team. The experience forged a competitive edge that he now hopes to instill in the next generation of Knights.
Over the past five seasons, Johnson served as the defensive backs coach at Knightdale, accumulating six years of overall coaching experience. Under his guidance the secondary showed marked improvement, helping the team finish the 2025 season with a 3‑7 overall record and a 2‑3 mark in the Northern Six 6A/7A conference.
Building a Championship Culture
Central to Johnson’s vision is a championship culture built on faith, family, discipline and accountability. He stresses that success is measured not only by wins on the field but by the development of young men who lead with integrity and serve their communities.
Off the field, Johnson is a proud father to a five‑year‑old daughter, a fact that underscores his belief that coaching is about shaping lasting impacts on the lives of the next generation.
He will succeed Pooh Ward, who recently accepted a head‑coaching position at SouthWest Edgecombe High School. Ward’s departure marks the end of an era, and Johnson is eager to fill the void with his own leadership style and community‑focused approach.
The Knightdale community anticipates that Johnson’s return will revitalize the program and guide the team toward a resurgence, aiming to transform the Knights into not just champions on the scoreboard but also role models off it.
