Rising Talents Set to Shape UCLA's Future
UCLA’s men’s basketball program revealed the addition of two international freshmen who will join the squad for the 2026‑27 campaign, marking a strategic move to blend elite talent with the university’s developmental pipeline.
Nikola Kusturica, a 17‑year‑old Serbian forward, arrives after a standout year with FC Barcelona’s youth academy, where he helped the club capture the U18 Adidas Next Generation Tournament championship in May.
At the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup, Kusturica led Serbia to a strong finish, averaging 24.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists over seven games while earning both the Best Defensive Player Award and a spot on the All‑Star Five.
His performances have positioned him as a potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2028 NBA Draft, a prospect that has drawn attention from analysts who see his combination of size, skill and defensive versatility as a rare blend for his age.
Gunārs Grīnvalds, an 18‑year‑old Latvian guard, brings professional experience from Real Madrid, where he contributed to the team’s LigaU title and shone during the NextGen EuroLeague Finals.
Grīnvalds also represented Latvia at the 2024 U16 Eurobasket, further cementing his reputation on the European stage before committing to the Bruins.
Coach Mick Cronin expressed enthusiasm about the new arrivals, noting that both players possess the work ethic and competitive drive needed to thrive in UCLA’s demanding environment.
