Camp Overview
USA Baseball has revealed the coaching staff that will guide the 2026 18U National Team through a two‑phase training camp in Cary, North Carolina. The program is split into Phase 1, running from July 16‑20, and Phase 2, scheduled for August 23‑26. Both sessions will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, a venue that has become a hub for elite youth development.
The camp’s curriculum blends intrasquad scrimmages with PDP Performance Assessments, giving coaches a comprehensive view of each prospect’s abilities. At the end of Phase 1, 44 players will be trimmed to a Phase 2 roster, and the final 20‑player squad will be announced after the second session concludes.
A Coaching Lineup Steeped in MLB Heritage
The staff reads like a who’s who of recent baseball history. Rick Eckstein, a veteran field coordinator, will oversee the overall direction of the 18U program, while Kirk Champion returns as pitching coach, bringing a decade of professional playing experience to the mound.
Ryan Zimmerman, a 2004 Collegiate National Team alumnus, makes his debut on a Training Camp staff, adding a player‑turned‑coach perspective. Brad Wilkerson, a 1995 18U alumnus, returns to manage the Light Blue squad, and Rick Ankiel, a two‑time 18U alumnus, will lead the Navy team in his third managerial stint.
AJ Pierzynski, a 19‑year MLB veteran and World Series champion, steps into his first USA Baseball managerial role, guiding Team Grey. Joining him on the staff are pitching veterans Joe Smith, Sam Freeman, Matt Guerrier, Will Harris, and Jamey Carroll, Ian Desmond and Chris Johnson, each bringing a blend of playing experience and coaching enthusiasm.
From World Champions to International Contenders
The 18U National Team enters the camp fresh off a historic victory, having captured its tenth world championship at the WBSC U‑18 Baseball World Cup in Okinawa, Japan. That triumph set the stage for the upcoming WBSC U‑18 Pan American Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where the team will compete from October 22‑29.
The road to Santo Domingo began with the selection of a 20‑player roster after Phase 2. The final squad will carry the momentum of the recent world title into a tournament that promises high‑stakes matchups against the best under‑18 talent in the Americas.
A New Generation of Leaders
Beyond the seasoned veterans, the camp introduces fresh faces to the coaching ecosystem. RJ Farrell, a two‑time 12U National Team manager, joins as an assistant for the Navy side, while Mike Kashirsky and Joey Hector make their USA Baseball coaching debuts as first‑time mentors.
The collective expertise of this staff — spanning nearly a decade of professional playing experience and multiple World Series pedigrees — creates a unique environment for player development. Their shared goal is to refine talent, foster teamwork, and prepare the next wave of American baseball stars for international competition.
