A New Era for Vancouver's Coaching Staff
Ryan Mougenel has been appointed assistant coach of the Vancouver Canucks, bringing a decorated AHL pedigree to the franchise.
The 2025‑26 Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award winner led the Providence Bruins to the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy with a 54‑16‑2‑0 record, amassing 110 points.
Mougenel spent eight seasons in Providence, five as head coach, compiling a 217‑103‑26‑14 record and guiding the club to a championship in 2024‑25.
His AHL journey began with stints as an assistant in Hershey, Worcester and San Jose before his promotion to head coach in Providence on Aug. 13, 2021.
He now joins a staff overseen by new head coach Manny Malhotra, who will be supported by assistants Jordan Smith, Jason Krog and Andrew Shaw.
Smith, a two‑year veteran of the Abbotsford Canucks, helped the team capture the Calder Cup in 2024‑25, while Krog has served as a skills and skating coach for both Vancouver and Abbotsford the past two seasons.
Andrew Shaw, previously the video coach for Abbotsford, rounds out the group with a blend of on‑ice and behind‑the‑scenes experience.
The move signals the Canucks’ intent to blend proven AHL success with fresh perspectives as they aim for a deep playoff run.
