Maddix Simpson, a versatile infielder who spent the last two seasons at Ohio State, announced his commitment to Vanderbilt on July 10, sending a wave of excitement through the Commodores’ recruiting class.
During the 2026 campaign Simpson posted a .283 batting average, smacked eight doubles and added four home runs, while earning praise for his elite defensive work at both third base and shortstop, a combination highlighted by D1Baseball’s Defensive Runs Saved metric.
Coaches view him as a depth piece who can slide into the lineup when needed, especially given that Vanderbilt returns established starters at shortstop and third base in the form of Ryker Waite and Brodie Johnston.
The move brings Simpson into a crowded infield picture, but his ability to patrol both positions gives the staff flexibility as they aim to maintain offensive production while shoring up defense.
Vanderbilt’s transfer portal activity since the 2025 season has been aggressive, with Simpson becoming the ninth newcomer to join the program, joining a cohort that includes position players Blaize Ward, Hunter Ray, Niko Brini, Matt Conte and Bud Coombs, as well as pitchers Shane Brinham, Gavin Lauridsen and Dominic Monaco.
