A Sudden Shift in Monetization Strategy
Electronic Arts announced that starting July 11, all paid progression will be eliminated from the Online Dynasty and Road to Glory modes of College Football 27, the company’s latest college‑football simulation. The update will be rolled out across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, removing the ability for players to purchase College Football Points for those specific experiences.
The decision follows a wave of criticism that erupted on social media, where creators such as Bordeaux helped amplify a boycott under the hashtag #CFBPlayDontPay. The campaign not only trended to No. 9 on U.S. Twitter but also prompted a noticeable dip in Steam reviews, which slipped into the “Mostly Negative” category during the height of the backlash.
While the points will remain usable in other parts of the game, those who bought them specifically for the now‑removed modes will find themselves unable to spend them there. EA has yet to clarify whether refunds will be offered to players who invested in the shortcuts, a silence that has left many feeling abandoned.
Company executives have indicated that monetization will continue across EA’s portfolio, but they promise improved communication with the community. The move is part of a broader strategy that also includes upcoming titles like Madden 27 and EA UFC 6, both slated for additional paid expansions.
Industry analysts view the rollback as a rare concession to fan pressure, yet they caution that the underlying business model remains intact. As EA prepares for its pending acquisition, the company appears to be testing the limits of consumer goodwill while still pushing forward with its monetization agenda.
