A Season for the Ages
Josh Haley entered his 15th year as head coach of the St. Joseph-Ogden baseball program with a simple goal: to build on the foundation laid by his predecessors. What unfolded was a campaign that would etch his name into the school's record books, as he guided the Spartans to a 40-2 finish and a Class 2A state championship.
The team rattled off two separate 18-game win streaks, captured the Illini Prairie Conference title and navigated a postseason path that featured shutout victories over Marshall, Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin and Williamsville. Haley's 500th career win arrived in the spring, a milestone that underscored his longevity and consistency.
The Spartans' journey included a 10-0 regional semifinal triumph over Marshall, a 10-0 regional title win against Bismarck-Henning, and a 6-3 sectional semifinal victory over Tri-Valley. After outlasting Unity 6-4 in nine innings, the squad blanked Williamsville 9-0 in the super-sectional before edging Ottawa Marquette 6-1 in the state semifinal. The championship was sealed with a 15-1 victory over Harvest-Westminster, capping a season that will be remembered for its resilience and dominance.
Beyond the diamond, the Haley family opened up about the emotional tapestry woven throughout the year. Wife Kara Haley and their four children — Mikyla, Will, Avery and Luke — shared how the demanding schedule shaped their daily lives, the pride they felt watching their father's team excel, and the special moments that bound them together.
