Two sophomores from Shady Side Academy are making waves in the national field hockey circuit this summer, drawing attention for their performances in prestigious showcases that bring together the country's most promising young talent.
Leadership and Adaptability on the National Stage
Rosa Ianetti, the academy's sophomore goalie, is competing in the AAU Junior Olympics, where she is not only guarding the net but also emphasizing the importance of building rapport with teammates. Her focus on remembering names and fostering connections reflects a deliberate approach to leadership that she hopes will translate into future team dynamics.
Jemma Kimball-Ruttenberg, also a sophomore, earned a spot in USA Field Hockey’s NEXUS championship, a program that identifies and develops the nation's top U18 talent. Selected from a pool of 55 athletes, she has been praised for her versatility, comfortably operating in both forward and midfield roles while demonstrating resilience honed through years of competition.
The pair helped Shady Side Academy capture its 22nd WPIAL Class A championship last fall, defeating Aquinas Academy 1-0 in a tightly contested final. Ianetti recorded nine saves in that game, contributing to a season in which the Bulldogs posted 11 shutouts, underscoring the program's defensive consistency.
Both athletes have spoken about the formative moments that shaped their careers, including Ianetti's decision to specialize in field hockey after a wrist injury in sixth grade and Kimball-Ruttenberg's transition from lacrosse and soccer to the sport in the same year.
