The Fairmont girls basketball team concluded the last campaign with a 27‑3 slate, culminating in a appearance at the 4A state championship game. Under the guidance of head coach Marcus Thompson, the squad has now posted four consecutive seasons with at least 20 victories, a testament to sustained excellence.
A Legacy of Winning
Thompson’s tenure is marked by a relentless drive to elevate the program, having steered the team to four straight 20‑win campaigns while cultivating a culture of accountability and ambition.
Among the standout contributors, Lyric McNair emerged as the offensive engine, averaging 12.9 points, 4.8 assists and 4.6 steals per game, a performance that earned her the Robeson County Player of the Year honor. Kimiyah Smith anchored the defense, posting 8.1 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per contest, a feat that secured her the Robeson County Defensive Player of the Year award. Aaliyah Duran rounded out the core with 10.9 points, four assists and 3.8 steals per game, garnering the county’s Underclassman of the Year accolade.
Offensive Evolution
This summer the team is placing a premium on offensive versatility, seeking to transform every player into a credible threat on the perimeter and inside the paint. By expanding the playbook and encouraging shared responsibility, the coaching staff aims to keep defenses guessing and to maximize scoring opportunities.
Integrating newcomers into the existing framework is a priority, as returning members work to preserve the chemistry that propelled the previous season’s success. The ultimate goal is to translate this momentum into another deep run in the state playoffs, with the program eyeing its next championship chapter.
