School Bus Overturns on Leland Exit Ramp, Driver Charged with Reckless Driving

Four injured after bus carrying Douglas Byrd High School football team leaves roadway; investigation continues

A school bus carrying the Douglas Byrd High School football team overturned on an exit ramp in Leland, North Carolina, after the driver failed to maintain a safe speed while negotiating a curve.

The driver, Annette Blount, 57, was subsequently charged with reckless driving and exceeding a safe speed, according to the Leland Police Department.

The crash occurred on the northbound U.S. 17 exit onto westbound U.S. 74, a location investigators say the bus approached at a speed above the posted limit.

Thirty‑three people were aboard the vehicle, including 26 students and seven adults, and four of them — two students and two adults — were taken to a local hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries.

All of the injured were released after treatment, though one staff member remained under medical observation as a precaution.

Investigation Underway

The Leland Police Department and Cumberland County Schools have opened a joint investigation, and officials say the inquiry will continue as they piece together the exact sequence of events.

Authorities have not released further details about potential contributing factors, but speed and road conditions are being examined as part of the ongoing review.
