A school bus transporting members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team overturned on an exit ramp in North Carolina early this week, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising immediate questions about transportation safety.
The driver, Annette Blount, was subsequently charged with reckless driving and exceeding a safe speed after investigators determined the bus was traveling above the posted limit while navigating the northbound U.S. 17 to westbound U.S. 74 interchange.
Injuries and Hospitalization
Four individuals, including two students and two adults, were transported to a nearby hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries. All of the students and staff were eventually discharged, though one adult remained under medical observation as a precaution.
The bus carried a total of 33 occupants — 26 students and seven adults — when the accident occurred while returning from a match at South Brunswick High School.
Cumberland County Schools, which operates the bus and the team, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement to determine the precise sequence of events.
The incident has reignited discussions about school transportation safety and the need for rigorous speed monitoring on state highways, especially during peak travel periods for youth sports.
