A Streak Ends in the Classic
The Kingston‑Saugerties American Legion Senior baseball team saw its eight‑game winning streak come to an abrupt halt on Tuesday night, dropping a 7‑3 decision to Hillcrest Post 1194 in the Gil Wood Memorial American Legion Baseball Classic.
Hillcrest surged ahead early, plating two runs in the third and two more in the fourth before adding a single tally in the fifth to build a 5‑2 lead.
Kingston‑Saugerties answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the gap to 5‑3, but Hillcrest pulled away with two more runs in the top of the seventh, sealing a 7‑3 final score.
The loss was compounded by three errors that turned what could have been earned runs into unearned ones, and the team managed only three hits over the course of the game.
Jake Young took the mound as the starter and suffered the loss, a performance that underscored the team’s defensive lapses.
Despite the setback, the squad remains poised to rebound, as they are slated to meet Binghamton Post 1645 in a loser’s‑bracket contest on Saturday, July 11.
