A Weekend of Baseball Heritage
Three high school baseball programs from the Potomac Valley recently returned from trips that took them from the hallowed grounds of Doubleday Field in Cooperstown to the steel‑city stadium of PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Pendleton County and Moorefield high schools faced off in a tournament at Doubleday Field, a site that every four years becomes a pilgrimage for the county’s baseball tradition. Coach Sam Yokum explained that the schedule is a deliberate effort to keep the community connected to the sport’s roots, and senior player Chase Owens called the field “special” and “awesome to play on.”
After their games, the Wildcats toured the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where Owens highlighted the chance to view memorabilia from Yankees legend Mickey Mantle as the highlight of the visit.
Meanwhile, Petersburg High traveled to Pittsburgh, where they squared off against Keyser at PNC Park, the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Vikings secured a 6‑0 victory, adding a triumphant note to their itinerary.
Community Pride and Future Aspirations
Local coaches and players alike said the experiences will inspire younger athletes, reinforcing the idea that baseball is more than a game — it is a shared cultural touchstone. The trips also underscore the value of exposing students to historic venues that have shaped the sport.
