A Season Tested by Injury
The Father McGivney Griffins have built a reputation as one of the most consistent programs in the region, posting five straight 30‑win seasons and adding two state runner‑up finishes, four regional titles, three sectional championships and two super‑sectional crowns to their résumé. Their recent 23‑7 record in 2026 reflects a program that continues to thrive under longtime coach Chris Erwin.
This spring, however, the team faces a significant challenge: the loss of top pitchers Ben Sink, Isaac Wendler and Ty Etcheson to injury has stripped the rotation of its most experienced arms. Coach Erwin has said the setback will not alter the Griffins’ core philosophy, but it does force a shift in how the club approaches each game.
Offensive Firepower Takes Center Stage
The Griffins’ bats have not missed a beat. As a unit they are hitting .395, and they are averaging 10.1 runs per game. Leading the charge is senior Omar Avalos, who boasts a .540 batting average, while Isaac Wendler paces the lineup with 37 RBIs, 16 doubles and eight home runs.
Freshman Jacoby Danco, who was not expected to start, has emerged as an unexpected starter, and his early outings suggest the staff may find stability despite the injury list. The depth of talent on the offensive side helps offset the pitching uncertainty.
The schedule ahead adds another layer of excitement. The Griffins travel to Staunton on May 19, host O’Fallon on May 20 and face Carrollton on May 21 before opening postseason play on May 27 as the No. 2 seed in the Class 2A Greenville Sectional.
