Season Opener Set for 2026
The University of South Carolina will open the 2026 college football season on September 5, hosting Kent State in a matchup that promises early excitement for fans across the Southeast.
Among the many storylines surrounding the team is the legacy of Kalimba Edwards, a former All‑American linebacker who starred for South Carolina from 1998 to 2001. Edwards wore the No. 55 jersey and remains one of the program’s most celebrated defensive players.
During his collegiate career, Edwards recorded seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss in 2000, earning recognition as a team captain and multiple All‑American honors in 2001. He was a semifinalist for both the Butkus Award and the Lombardi Award, and he still shares ninth place in school history with 15 career sacks.
The Detroit Lions selected Edwards in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft, and he went on to play seven seasons in the league, six with Detroit and one with the Oakland Raiders. He emerged as a multi‑year starter and led the Lions in sacks in two separate seasons.
Although Edwards was later nominated for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, he fell short of the required vote threshold and was not enshrined. Nonetheless, his impact on the program endures, and his jersey remains a touchstone for current players.
The upcoming game against Kent State also marks a celebration of past glories as the Gamecocks look to build on recent successes and launch a new era under head coach Shane Beamer. The contest will be broadcast nationally, highlighting the university’s growing prominence in the college football landscape.
