A turbulent World Cup campaign
Senegal’s football federation confirmed the termination of Pape Thiaw’s contract and that of his entire technical staff just days after the team’s elimination in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
The decision follows a turbulent tournament in which Senegal had earlier celebrated a disputed continental title in Morocco, a triumph that was subsequently annulled by the Confederation of African Football.
The federation said the change was required to safeguard the future of Senegalese football and to address the disappointment felt by fans after a campaign that promised much but delivered little.
Appeal and future plans
Senegal had taken a 2‑0 lead against Belgium in the dying minutes of the match, only to concede an equaliser in the 83rd minute, a result that left the team’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
Earlier group‑stage defeats to France and Norway had already placed the squad under intense scrutiny, and the coaching staff’s departure was presented as a necessary reset.
The Senegalese authorities have already opened a formal appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, hoping to overturn the continental title’s revocation and to secure a more stable coaching future.
While the federation has not yet named a successor, officials indicated that a new appointment would be made once the appeal process is clarified.
