A Community Baseball Initiative
The GLOW YMCA Challenger Baseball Clinic opened its doors at Dwyer Stadium this weekend, bringing together youngsters from across the region with players from the Batavia Muckdogs. The free program, designed for participants aged five to twenty‑one, focuses on core baseball skills such as hitting, catching, throwing and running the bases while fostering a competitive yet supportive environment.
Emily Hirsch, senior director of youth and family services for the GLOW YMCA, noted that the clinic reaches families in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties, highlighting its broad regional impact. "Our goal is to provide a safe space where kids can learn the game and build confidence," she said.
The kickoff event was sponsored by the YMCA, the Muckdogs and the Batavia City Police Department, which also contributed a K‑9 unit to help create a welcoming atmosphere for participants and families alike.
Volunteer Shelley Falitico paired each child with a Muckdogs player, guiding them through drills and encouraging teamwork. The collaboration ensures that every youngster receives personalized attention while learning the fundamentals of the sport.
Nine‑year‑old Braxton Longhini, who enjoys hitting and names outfielder Kyle Vaughn as his favorite Muckdog, was among the many eager participants. "I love swinging the bat and running the bases," he exclaimed, reflecting the enthusiasm of his peers.
The clinic’s schedule features rotating stations for catching, throwing, base running and hitting, with groups shifting every ten to fifteen minutes to keep the energy high and the learning continuous.
After this Saturday’s session, the program will continue for three more Saturdays at Williams Park, giving families additional opportunities to engage in the sport and benefit from the mentorship of professional players.
Building Skills and Community
Beyond the on‑field instruction, the clinic serves as a conduit for community building, bringing together local organizations, youth services and law enforcement under a shared mission. The partnership underscores a commitment to youth development and public safety, illustrating how sport can bridge gaps between different segments of the community.
