A Revamped Tournament Structure
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is raising its winner‑take‑all prize to $2 million for the 2026 edition, a move that underscores the league’s rapid ascent and its ambition to reward elite competition.
For 2026 the field will be trimmed to 16 teams, divided evenly between an Alumni Bracket and a Non‑Alumni Bracket. The alumni side will stage best‑of‑three series on college campuses, featuring traditional powerhouses such as Kentucky and Louisville, while the open‑application non‑alumni side will converge in Las Vegas.
The first alumni matchup pits Kentucky’s La Familia, led by former NBA big man Willie Cauley‑Stein, against Louisville’s The Ville, captained by Russ Smith. Both programs bring deep histories and passionate fan bases, setting the tone for a summer of high‑stakes basketball.
Four of the eight Las Vegas slots have already been claimed, with TeamBIG.io, fronted by Baron Davis, and Black Sheep, led by Dee Strange‑Gordon, securing places. The remaining four spots are on sale, with entry fees starting at $125,000 per team, inviting entrepreneurial groups to join the action.
The tournament kicks off on July 18 with the Kentucky‑Louisville showdown, and the championship game is slated for August 2. The winner of the Non‑Alumni Bracket will travel to the home court of the Alumni Bracket champion for the final, adding a unique travel twist to the single‑elimination climax.
CEO Jon Mugar has said the new format is designed to deliver a better experience to more basketball fans and players, a sentiment echoed by the record‑setting numbers from the previous year: over 500,000 viewers tuned in on Fox for the 2025 championship, and attendance topped 85,000 fans, a surge of more than 136 % since 2022.
With the prize pool doubled, a fresh bracket architecture, and a blend of campus sites and a Vegas finale, TBT is positioning itself as a premier summer attraction that promises both competitive fire and a festive atmosphere for players and spectators alike.
