A New Era for The Basketball Tournament
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is reshaping its formula for 2026, expanding to a 16‑team field and attaching a $2 million prize to the champion. The growth reflects a surge in both live attendance and television viewership, with the league reporting a 136 percent increase in annual attendance since 2022 and half‑million‑plus viewers for the 2025 championship game.
At the heart of the new schedule is a best‑of‑three series pitting Kentucky alumni, known as La Familia, against their Louisville counterparts, The Ville. The rivalry, already storied, will be contested by La Familia’s roster featuring Willie Cauley‑Stein, Archie Goodwin and Reid Travis, coached by Jon Hood, and The Ville’s squad led by Russ Smith, Edgar Sosa and Malik Williams, overseen by Michael Baffour.
Game one is slated for July 18 at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Kentucky, and will air on FOX. Game two follows on July 20 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, broadcast on FS1. The host for a potential third game will be decided by ticket sales, adding a dynamic element to the series.
The winner of the Kentucky‑Louisville matchup will advance to face the victor of the Syracuse‑Seton Hall bracket on July 26, while other alumni bracket pairings include Kansas versus Kansas State and Wichita State against New Mexico. The Alumni Bracket championship is scheduled for July 29, and the Las Vegas Bracket will run from July 22‑30 at the M Resort Spa Casino, with its champion meeting the Alumni winner on August 2.
Beyond the on‑court drama, the tournament’s momentum is underscored by record‑breaking crowds. La Familia’s previous encounter with The Ville drew 13,506 fans, setting a new TBT attendance mark, and the 2025 championship attracted over 500,000 television viewers. With plans for further expansion in 2026, the league is positioning itself as a premier showcase for former college stars.
