The Brampton Steelheads announced the addition of Finnish goaltender Oskari Ahmajarvi, the seventh overall selection in the 2026 CHL Import Draft, signaling the club’s intent to bolster its defensive lineup ahead of the upcoming season.
A Finnish prospect with proven pedigree
Born in Nurmijärvi, a small municipality north of Helsinki, Ahmajarvi grew up skating on frozen lakes before rising through Finland’s junior ranks, ultimately catching the eye of scouts with his poise between the pipes.
During the 2025‑26 campaign he posted a 2.34 goals‑against average and a .910 save percentage in the U20 SM‑Sarja, numbers that placed him among the league’s most reliable net‑minders.
His international résumé includes appearances for Finland at the U16, U17 and U18 levels, where he gained experience in high‑pressure tournaments against some of Europe’s top prospects.
Director of Goaltending David Shantz praised the newcomer, highlighting his competitive fire and consistent track record. “Oskari brings a blend of skill and mental toughness that aligns perfectly with our ambitions,” Shantz said in a statement.
The Steelheads hope the 2026 draft pick can translate his European success to the North American style of play, contributing immediately to a team that aims to contend for a championship next year.
Fans can expect to see Ahmajarvi don the Steelheads’ sweater for the first time during the preseason opener, where his performance will be closely watched by both coaching staff and the local community.
