Shawn Sullivan, a highly touted right-handed pitcher from Ohio, announced that he will forgo the 2026 MLB Draft and sign with the University of Tennessee, passing up a projected slot that had placed him at No. 132 on MLB.com’s draft board.
The decision marks a reversal of his earlier pledge to Alabama and positions him as the No. 78 prospect in the 2026 recruiting class according to Perfect Game, as well as the top right-handed prospect from his home state.
Tennessee’s 2025 campaign under head coach Josh Elander proved to be a breakthrough, finishing with a 38-22 overall record and a 15-15 mark in SEC play, highlighted by series victories over Mississippi State and Texas and an unprecedented 14-0 unbeaten streak in midweek games — the only program nationwide to achieve such a feat.
The Volunteers’ season ultimately ended in the Chapel Hill Regional, securing their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA postseason and underscoring the rapid rise of the program in just its second year under Elander.
Analysts say Sullivan’s commitment not only bolsters Tennessee’s pitching rotation but also signals a shifting power dynamic in college baseball, as top prospects increasingly weigh program trajectory over traditional draft expectations.
