Jake Davis, a 6-foot-6 sharpshooting wing, has become a cornerstone of the Illinois Fighting Illini’s offense heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
During his junior year he started 19 games and logged at least 12 minutes in 27 consecutive contests, from December 13 through the season’s end. His offensive rating of 146.6 topped the nation, underscoring his efficiency as a scorer.
From Role Player to Offensive Engine
The transformation began after a stint at Mercer, where Davis honed his three-point mechanics before joining the Illini. This season he shot 40.6 percent from beyond the arc, placing ninth in the Big Ten and marking a dramatic jump from his sophomore numbers.
Coach Kyle Tausk has praised Davis’s ability to stretch defenses, noting that his increased playing time — more than double from the previous year — has allowed the team to diversify its attack. The wing’s resurgence also coincides with injuries to key backcourt players, prompting his re-entry into the starting lineup in January after Kylan Boswell broke his hand.
With Andrej Stojakovic still recuperating from a knee injury, Davis seized the opening to become a starter early in the season, a role he has embraced while continuing to elevate his game. His performance not only fuels Illinois’s ambitions for the upcoming season but also positions him as a potential NBA prospect.
